Wasp Nest Control Devon & Cornwall

Wasp Control & Nest Removel  Devon & Cornwall

⚠️ Professional vs. DIY Treatment

Safety

Highly Recommended. Technicians use specialised protective clothing to prevent stings.

Effectiveness

Very High. They use powerful, professional-grade insecticidal dust (poison) that is carried deep into the nest, killing the entire colony and the queen.

Location

Can safely access nests in difficult places like high lofts, wall cavities, and under eaves.

⚠️ DIY Treatment

Safety

High Risk. Disturbing a nest can lead to a mass attack, which is dangerous, especially if you or anyone nearby is allergic.

Effectiveness

Low to Medium. Over-the-counter sprays often only kill surface wasps, leaving the main colony and the queen intact, which can make the remaining wasps more aggressive or cause them to move to a new location.

Location

Should only be attempted if the nest is small, easily accessible, and you are not allergic.

🛠️ How a Professional Treats a Wasp Nest

The most common and effective method used by professionals is:

Locate the Entry Point: The technician first identifies the exact hole where the wasps are entering and exiting (often a small hole in a fascia board, air brick, or wall cavity).

Apply Insecticide Dust: They use a long dust stick or puffer to apply a small amount of professional-grade insecticidal powder directly into the entry point.

Wasp Transport: The worker wasps flying in and out land on the dust, coating themselves in the poison.

Colony Eradication: The workers carry the dust deep into the nest, contaminating the nest structure, the larvae, and the queen.

Destruction: The entire colony is typically destroyed within a few hours to 24 hours. The nest does not need to be physically removed, as the wasps will not reuse it.

The best time to check for and treat nests is in the late spring/early summer when the nests are small. By August and September, the nests are at their peak size, containing thousands of aggressive wasps, making treatment more urgent.

📅 Wasp Life Cycle and Peak Activity

queen_new_125.jpg

Spring (April/May):

 The Queen Emerges.

New queen wasps emerge from hibernation and start building a new nest, which is initially very small (like a golf ball).

Best Time for Prevention: This is the best time to seal up entry points around your house, shed, and loft.

Summer (June/July):

Colony Expansion.

Worker wasps hatch and take over nest building and foraging. The nest grows rapidly.

Wasps are mainly hunting insects (like caterpillars and aphids) to feed the larvae. They are beneficial at this stage.

Late Summer/Early Autumn (August/September):

The Nuisance Phase.

The nest has reached its peak size (up to thousands of wasps).

The larvae, which feed the workers, stop being produced. The workers no longer have a job and switch from hunting protein to aggressively searching for sugary food.

This is when they become a major nuisance at picnics, BBQs, and near fruit trees, as they are essentially "sugar-seeking missiles."

Late Autumn (October/November):

Decline.

New queens mate and fly off to hibernate. The original queen, all the workers, and males die off as the cold weather sets in.

Wasp nests are never reused in the following year.

🚫 Prevention and Deterrence Tips

1. Seal Entry Points

  • Inspect Early: In spring (April/May), check lofts, sheds, under eaves, air bricks, and wall cavities for signs of a queen starting a nest (a small paper-like ball).

  • Block Holes: Use mesh, caulk, or fine wire screening to seal up gaps and holes in your house's exterior to deny queens a space to build.

2. Manage Food Sources (Crucial for Devon & Cornwall Summers)

Wasps are primarily attracted to sweet things in the late summer:

  • Secure Bins: Keep outdoor rubbish bins and compost heaps securely sealed with

  • tight-fitting lids or bungee cords.

  • Don't Leave Food Out: When eating or drinking outside, keep sugary foods

  • (jam, cakes, fruit), meat scraps, and sweet drinks covered. Wasps are

  • notorious for crawling into open drinks cans.

  • Clear Fallen Fruit: If you have fruit trees (common in the South West), promptly

  • pick up any fallen fruit, as the fermenting sugars attract them.
